At Standard Chartered, our purpose as an international bank is to drive commerce and prosperity through our unique diversity. Our heritage and values are expressed in our brand promise – Here for good. As Malaysia’s oldest operating bank, Standard Chartered Malaysia is committed to promoting social and economic development in the markets we serve and proud to have grown with Malaysia for 149 years.
Futuremakers by Standard Chartered is the Bank’s global initiative to tackle inequality by promoting greater economic inclusion in our markets. Futuremakers supports disadvantaged youth aged 35 or under, especially girls and people with visual impairments, to learn new skills and improve their chances of employment or starting their own business. Between 2019 and the end of 2023, Futuremakers reached over 2.1 million young people, 68 per cent women and girls globally, with education, employability skills and entrepreneur training and support.
Since its launch in 2019, Standard Chartered Malaysia has impacted the lives of over 30,000 Malaysian youths through various Futuremakers programmes and contributed close to MYR7 million in total to realise these initiatives.
Standard Chartered Malaysia’s Futuremakers programmes highlights:
Our Women in Enterpreneurship (WiE), is an entrepreneurship focused programme in collaboration with Mereka, specifically created for our women entrepreneurs and start-ups. It’s an accelerator programme that provides hands-on learning experiences and workshops focused on business strategy, financial management and marketing. The top 5 organisations were selected to receive a seed funding of USD20,000 each.
A programme that prepares unemployed and underemployed graduates and SMEs in the digital economy through a digital readiness course and career mentorships. We engaged 500 learners and 146 SMEs over the 2-year programme.
Our Young Futuremakers programme is a collaboration programme with the International Labor Organisation (ILO) that supports the employability of young workers, as well as technical vocational education and training trainees and graduates. The programme has 8,136 youth participants (including intensive and non-intensive) from B40 or low-tier M40 communities in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Kedah.
Goal is our global award-winning education-focused programme that aimed towards adolescent girls (aged 12-18). Goal combines sports with life-skills training to empower girls with the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to be integral economic leaders in their families and communities. Goal has reached out to more than 9,000 girls nationwide since its launch in Malaysia in 2018.
Financial education is one of our employee-led programmes initiatives to develop financial capabilities of youths and small businesses by enhancing their knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards money. In 2023, more than 650 beneficiaries from local colleges benefited from this programme.
Giving back to the community is an integral part of the Bank's DNA. Each employee is given three days of volunteering leave annually. We encourage our colleagues to volunteer our skills and expertise in the local communities.
