MY MOTIVATION
I only got to know palliative care when my late father was diagnosed with the final stage of lung cancer (it was only 5 weeks from diagnosed to my dad's passing). There's no palliative care back in my hometown, I remember our family member feeling helpless in managing my dad's pain, and we have to google for the information to educate ourselves on how to take care cancer patient.
We were referred to a palliative care doctor about 1.5 hours away from my hometown, and it was just a few days before my dad passed away, despite hesitating to take on the trip to meet the doctor because my father was already very ill, I am glad I did because the doctor explained how to manage the pain, and guided me through what would I be expecting between then until end of life, and most importantly palliative care is not only for the patient but also for the family member who is taking care of the patient.
With the guidance from the palliative doctor, we managed to relief some of my dad's symptoms until he passed away peacefully few days later.
The value of palliative care is priceless, I see the urgent need to have wider network coverage as well as more trained professional to support those in need.
